Royal William Yard

Monumental former naval victualling yard remade as Plymouth waterfront restaurants, galleries, and walks.

Royal William Yard is one of Plymouth's best pieces of industrial waterfront: a huge early-19th-century naval victualling complex built in pale limestone on the edge of Stonehouse. The scale is the thing to notice first. These were not polite warehouses but an imperial food factory, designed to feed the Royal Navy with military order and architectural confidence.

Today the yard works as a handsome waterside quarter of restaurants, bars, studios, and apartments. Come for a meal or a drink, but leave time to walk the quays and look back across the Tamar approaches; the buildings make much more sense when you see how directly they address the water.
