Poultry Cross

A fifteenth-century hexagonal market cross at the junction of Silver Street and Minster Street, one of only four surviving medieval market crosses in England. It marked the spot in the Market Place where poultry was sold, and its buttressed canopy still shelters the stall-holders who set up around it on market days. The surrounding streets retain much of their medieval plan and several good half-timbered buildings.

The cross is unremarkable from a distance but worth a close look — the carved details, including niches that once held statues, give a sense of how important the ritual ordering of medieval markets was.
