Coventry Transport Museum

Largest collection of British road vehicles, plus supersonic Thrust cars

The largest collection of British road vehicles under one roof, and one of the genuinely great free museums in England. The Transport Museum traces Coventry's history as the cradle of the British motor industry, from the penny-farthings and safety bicycles of the 1880s — Coventry produced the first production bicycles in Britain — through the Daimler, the Jaguar, and the Triumph, to the present day.

The Land Speed Record Gallery, opened in 2015, is the highlight: ThrustSSC and Thrust 2 take up most of it, and a 4D simulator lets you experience the record run from Green's cockpit. Allow at least two hours; the museum is free and substantially better than it has any right to be for a city this size.

A story
ThrustSSC, the car parked in the museum's record-breaking gallery, became the first land vehicle to officially break the sound barrier on 15 October 1997, reaching 763 mph (1,228 km/h) on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Its driver, Andy Green, is a Royal Air Force fighter pilot. The car sits alongside Thrust 2, which set the previous record in 1983. Both machines were developed in Britain, and both ended up here.
