Coventry's must-see is the cathedral complex: the bombed-out shell of the medieval St Michael's Cathedral, deliberately preserved as a war memorial, and Basil Spence's new cathedral consecrated in 1962 directly alongside it. Together they make one of the most powerful architectural statements in England. Graham Sutherland's vast tapestry of Christ inside is not to everyone's taste, but it demands attention.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is strong on local history and has a decent fine art collection. The Museum of British Road Transport celebrates Coventry's century as the heartland of British car and cycle manufacturing — Triumph, Jaguar, and Daimler all started here. Unusually for a car museum, it's genuinely interesting even if you're not a petrolhead.
Lady Godiva's statue in Broadgate is the obvious photo stop. The Coventry Transport Museum expanded its collection significantly around City of Culture year and is now one of the largest transport museums in the world.
