Church Lane

Narrow cobbled passage of overhanging Tudor buildings

Church Lane is the famous picture of Ledbury — a narrow cobbled passage rising from the High Street to St Michael's churchyard, lined with timber-framed Tudor buildings whose upper storeys lean towards each other over your head. The effect is genuinely medieval: you can stretch your arms and touch buildings on both sides.

Several of the buildings are worth pausing at. The Heritage Centre in the old grammar school is a free local museum on the town's history; the Painted Room is in the building immediately uphill; the Butcher Row House Museum holds a small collection of crafts and traditional tools. The lane is barely a hundred metres long, but you should walk it slowly and with a camera.
