Eastnor Castle

Romantic mock-medieval castle of 1812, set in a deer park

Eastnor Castle sits two miles east of Ledbury in a deer park at the foot of the Malverns. It is open to the public on most weekends from Easter to October, and the visit is a complete period set-piece: the Great Hall with its medieval armoury, the long Gothic drawing room, the Pugin-decorated state apartments, and a small lake immediately below the castle. The wider estate has marked walking trails, an adventure playground and the long-stay deer herd.

The castle is also a regular wedding and film location — most recently it doubled for the British country house in Bridgerton. Check the open-day calendar before driving out; on closed days only the grounds are accessible, on a separate ticket.

A story
Eastnor is not a real castle but a deliberate Romantic-era invention — designed in 1812 by Robert Smirke (later the architect of the British Museum) for the 2nd Earl Somers, who wanted his family pile to look medieval. The interior is decked out in Italian Renaissance frescoes, suits of armour and Pugin-designed Gothic gilding, and the surrounding 5,000-acre estate hosts the annual Big Chill festival.
