The Painted Room is on the first floor of a half-timbered house on Church Lane that was used as the town council offices for most of the twentieth century. In 1988, builders stripping back damp plaster found a complete set of late-Tudor wall paintings underneath — floral and geometric panels in red, black and white ochre, dating from about 1580.
The room has been carefully restored and is open to the public in summer afternoons; entry is free. A volunteer guide is usually present to explain the paintings and the building's history. It takes ten minutes to see — a small, unexpected gem on a street that already feels like a film set.
