Whitmore Reans

Whitmore Reans is the heart of Wolverhampton's South Asian community, a residential area just north-west of the city centre that has been home to British-Punjabi and Sikh families since the 1960s. Walking through here is a reminder that Wolverhampton has one of the largest Sikh communities in Britain outside of Southall, and that this community has shaped the city's food culture, its social life, and its politics in ways that are still very much visible.

The area has good South Asian grocery shops, sweet shops selling jalebi and barfi, and a number of karahi and balti restaurants that are aimed squarely at the local community rather than tourists. It is informal and unhurried. If you want to eat South Asian food the way Wolverhampton actually eats it — not a tourist version — this is where to come.
