Things to Do

Wolverhampton's standout attraction is its art gallery, which is free and genuinely excellent — one of the best reasons to visit the city. The historic centre around St Peter's Church rewards a short wander, particularly for the Anglo-Saxon pillar in the churchyard. The curious Bargain Stone in the churchyard wall is easy to miss but worth finding. For performing arts, the Grand Theatre and the Civic Hall cover everything from touring West End shows to major music acts.

Molineux Stadium — home to Wolverhampton Wanderers — is just north of the centre and can be visited on a stadium tour or on matchday. The Old Town Hall is a fine Victorian civic building worth a look in passing.

The biggest day-trip asset is Wightwick Manor, a National Trust property just a couple of miles west — an extraordinary Arts and Crafts house stuffed with Pre-Raphaelite art, William Morris wallpapers, and De Morgan tiles. Bilston, a few miles south-east, has historical interest for fans of the Black Country's industrial craft heritage.
