Ye Olde Black Boy

Old Town pub on High Street with 18th-century interiors and a long association with the city's coffee-shop history

Ye Olde Black Boy on High Street is one of Hull's oldest pubs, with a building stretching back to the 17th century and a continuous record of use as a coffee house, tavern, and later pub. The interior is a labyrinth of small panelled rooms — including a snug behind a half-door — and the bar offers a rotating range of Yorkshire cask ales.

The name and sign refer either to a 17th-century portrait or, more uncomfortably, to one of Hull's earlier links to colonial trade — a reminder, on the same street as the Wilberforce House, of the longer history. The pub is a short walk from the Museums Quarter and an obvious last stop on an Old Town crawl.
