Eating Out

Hull's restaurant scene is better than its reputation suggests, with two distinct clusters that reward exploration. The Old Town and Fruit Market hold the best independent kitchens, with the warehouse spaces of Humber Street acting as Hull's design-conscious food strip. Princes Avenue, north-west of the centre in the Avenues district, is the other strong cluster — more local, more relaxed, with cheaper rents that have kept the independents in. Trinity Market is the best stop for street food, with a long bar and stalls running until early evening. Fresh fish from the Humber and herring from the North Sea are local specialities; the Hull-style pattie — a deep-fried mashed-potato cake with sage — is worth trying at any chip shop.
