The Spurn Lightship spent her working life moored off Spurn Point, the long sand spit at the mouth of the Humber, warning ships away from the shifting sandbanks. Built in 1927 and decommissioned in 1985, she was towed up to the Marina and restored as a museum ship.
Tours take you through the engine room, the crew quarters, and the brass lantern room — restored to working order. The interior is cramped, the staircases steep, but the lightship's compactness gives a vivid sense of life at sea: seven men confined for a month at a time, kept awake by the constant clang of the warning bell. As part of Hull's ongoing maritime restoration project, access can be limited; check before visiting.
