Sheffield's location on the edge of the Peak District is its single greatest asset. Stanage Edge, a four-mile gritstone escarpment that is a mecca for climbers and walkers, is 30 minutes by car or bus to Hathersage and a short walk further. Chatsworth House, one of the great English country houses, is about 45 minutes south-west. Castleton and the limestone Hope Valley reach by train in under an hour; from Castleton you can walk into Mam Tor, Winnats Pass, and the Blue John caverns. The cities of Leeds, Manchester, and York are all under 90 minutes by train.
