Sheffield's principal art and design gallery, opened in 2001 in a striking white building connected directly to the Winter Garden. The permanent collection includes the spectacular Metalwork Gallery — knives, forks, tea services, and ornamental silver showing four centuries of Sheffield craftsmanship — and the Ruskin Gallery, a collection of art and artefacts assembled by John Ruskin specifically for the working people of Sheffield in 1875.
Temporary exhibitions are usually first-rate and free. Allow 90 minutes for the permanent galleries; longer if a major show is on. The café upstairs is decent. Open daily.
