A central public square laid out in 1998 on the south side of the Town Hall, with a generous lawn, twelve cascading water jets that children play in on hot days, and four corner fountains modelled on Sheffield's traditional knife-grinder's wheel. The bronze statue at the centre, Hold-Together, commemorates the steel industry that built the city.
It is the most successful piece of late-1990s public realm in Sheffield and the focal point of the city centre's social life — students, office workers, and families converge here in summer. The Mercure Hotel and the Town Hall ring the square on two sides; the Winter Garden is a short walk through the Heart of the City development.
