Sheffield's most famous music venue, opened in 1980 in a derelict flour mill on the edge of the city centre. The 1,000-capacity main room has hosted nearly every band of note from Pulp to Arctic Monkeys, almost always on the way up; the venue also has a smaller late-night club and runs as an indie disco several nights a week.
Programming covers indie, electronic, hip-hop, and the occasional bigger touring act stopping off between London and Glasgow. The bar is cheap, the sound is good, and the entire history of British alternative music is more or less written on the walls.
