Skosh

York's best small-plates restaurant on Micklegate, with modern British cooking and Asian influences

Skosh on Micklegate is consistently considered one of the best places to eat in York. The format is small plates — five or six dishes per person covers it adequately — and the cooking combines British seasonal ingredients with techniques and flavour combinations drawn from Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. The result is creative without being difficult: this is food that makes sense as you eat it even when the combinations are unexpected. The restaurant occupies an old building on the south side of Micklegate, the street that leads from Micklegate Bar towards the city centre.

The room is small and fills up quickly; booking ahead is strongly recommended and even then you may find yourself on a waiting list. The tasting menu format is available, but ordering à la carte from the small plates works well. The wine list is short and carefully chosen, and the team are good at recommending what to drink with what. It is not cheap, but it is worth the price.
