Arbroath is a working Angus harbour town with a bigger story than its tidy seafront first suggests. The ruined abbey is tied to the Declaration of Arbroath, the Signal Tower tells the story of the Bell Rock Lighthouse, and the red sandstone cliffs north of town give the coast a wilder edge.
This is also the home of the Arbroath smokie, the hot-smoked haddock that still gives the town a distinct smell and taste. Come for the abbey and harbour, then walk the cliffs if the weather is clear.
