Peebles

Scottish Borders town on the Tweed, with castle ruins, gardens, and Glentress forest trails.

Peebles is a handsome Borders town on the River Tweed, close enough to Edinburgh for a day trip but with a slower rhythm of its own. It has stone houses, independent shops, riverside paths, and hills that begin almost at the edge of town.

The appeal is split between town and countryside. Neidpath Castle watches the Tweed from a bend in the river, Dawyck Botanic Garden is one of the Borders' best garden visits, and Glentress Forest gives mountain bikers and walkers a proper reason to linger.

Peebles is not as abbey-rich as Melrose or Jedburgh, but it is one of the easiest Borders towns to enjoy without an agenda. Walk the High Street, follow the river, then choose castle, garden, or forest depending on the weather.

Things to Do

Peebles works because its sights sit close to good walking country. The town centre and Tweed paths are pleasant on their own, while Neidpath Castle, Dawyck Botanic Garden, and Glentress Forest each give a spare day a different shape.
