People's Story Museum

Free museum in the Canongate Tolbooth, telling the story of Edinburgh's working people since 1700

Address 163 Canongate, Edinburgh EH8 8BN

The People's Story occupies the Canongate Tolbooth, a 16th-century building that served as the council house, courthouse, and prison for the former burgh of Canongate. The museum tells the history of Edinburgh's working population rather than its institutions and famous men: a reconstruction of a Victorian working-class tenement kitchen, displays on trade unions and political reform, oral histories of 20th-century Edinburgh life. The building itself is worth seeing — the projecting tower with its iron-caged clock is one of the Royal Mile's most distinctive façades.
