The Tolbooth Tavern occupies the ground floor of the Canongate Tolbooth, adjacent to the People's Story Museum. It is a straightforward pub without the artifice of many Royal Mile establishments: wooden interior, good selection of Scottish ales, food that is honest rather than tourist-oriented. The location at the lower end of the Canongate, away from the highest concentrations of visitor traffic on the upper Royal Mile, means it retains more of a neighbourhood character than pubs closer to the castle.
