Portobello Swim Centre is a Victorian public baths building on the promenade, with a Turkish suite — steam rooms, a plunge pool, a tepidarium — that has been in more or less continuous operation since 1901. The baths were restored and reopened after a period of threatened closure and are now one of the better leisure facilities in Edinburgh. The Turkish suite is the main draw for visitors: an hour of alternating steam and cold plunge is a restorative experience, particularly after a winter beach walk. The main pool is a conventional 25-metre facility. Book the Turkish suite in advance, especially at weekends.
