Portobello Open Air Pool Site

Site of Edinburgh's historic outdoor lido, closed in 1978, now host to summer wild swimming events

Address Portobello Promenade, Edinburgh EH15

Portobello's outdoor swimming pool was one of Scotland's grandest seaside lidos, opened in 1936 with a capacity of 6,000 spectators and one of the few wave machines in Britain. It closed in 1978 and was demolished, but the memory of it persists in the neighbourhood and in an active campaign to build a new lido on the site. The promenade here has murals and historical markers recording the pool's existence; community swimming groups use the beach at this point. Worth knowing the history when walking the promenade — it tells you something about Portobello's civic ambition in its seaside resort era.
