Fort George is a huge star-shaped fortress on a spit of land east of Inverness, built after the 1745 Jacobite rising to keep the Highlands under control. It has remained in military use ever since, which is part of what makes it so striking: this is not a romantic ruin, but an intact Georgian fortress.
Visitors can walk the ramparts, look across the Moray Firth, and explore museum displays on Highland military history. It pairs well with Culloden and Clava Cairns if you want a day focused on the history around Inverness.
