The Ceilidh Place

The Ceilidh Place is Ullapool's most distinctive institution — a hotel, restaurant, bar, bookshop, and arts venue rolled into one. It was founded in 1970 by the actor Robert Urquhart, originally as a coffee shop and performance space, and it has retained a slightly bohemian, culturally minded character ever since. The bookshop attached to the café is one of the better small bookshops in the Highlands, strong on Scottish writing and natural history.

The restaurant serves locally caught seafood alongside Scottish beef and game. The bar is lively on evenings when live folk music or a ceilidh is scheduled — events that draw visitors from across the area. The bunk rooms and rooms upstairs are an affordable option for walkers and independent travellers. Even if you are not staying, worth dropping in for a coffee and a browse.
