San Pedro is the main town on Ambergris Caye, located at the southern end of the island. What was a fishing village until the 1980s is now Belize's most developed tourist destination, with resorts, restaurants, dive shops, bars, and a permanent population that swells significantly during high season.
The streets are sand and the primary transport is golf cart — renting one is a good way to explore the island beyond the main strip. The beach north of town is better than in the town center itself, where boat traffic and development crowd the shoreline.
Connections to Belize City and Caye Caulker by water taxi run throughout the day. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air have multiple daily flights to both the international and municipal airports in Belize City.
