Day Trips

The closest day trip is Caye Caulker, 45 minutes south by water taxi. It is smaller, scruffier, and markedly more relaxed than San Pedro — the unofficial slogan is "Go Slow" and it is observed. If the pace of development in San Pedro feels like too much, an afternoon on Caye Caulker is a useful reset.

The Great Blue Hole is Belize's most famous dive site and technically doable as a day trip, though it is a long one — the site is 70km north and the boat ride takes around two hours each way. Most operators combine it with dives at the Lighthouse Reef and Half Moon Caye. A full-day trip runs around US$250–300 per person including equipment.

Mainland Belize is accessible from San Pedro via water taxi to Belize City, then onward by bus or tour. The Lamanai Mayan ruins on the New River — reachable by a river boat journey through jungle — are one of the more atmospheric archaeological sites in Central America. Belize City itself is a practical transit hub rather than a tourist destination, but it is the gateway to the rest of the country.
