Eating Out

The tourist strip along Barrier Reef Drive has no shortage of restaurants, but the best eating in San Pedro often involves wandering off the main drag. Belizean seafood is the highlight — spiny lobster, conch ceviche, and whole grilled snapper — and the freshness is hard to beat when the boats come in daily. Prices are noticeably higher than on the mainland, reflecting the island's captive-audience economics, but the quality at the better spots justifies it.

Rice and beans with stewed chicken or fish is the local staple and available almost everywhere. Look for the smaller, cheaper spots away from the waterfront for a more honest price and a more Belizean experience.
