Stettler

East-central Alberta town known for prairie railway excursions and a strong local-history museum.

Stettler is a small town in east-central Alberta, about 100 km east of Red Deer. It calls itself the Heart of Alberta, and on an ordinary day it feels like a farm-service town with a wide main street, grain-country horizons, and a few good reasons to stop.

The reason to plan around Stettler is Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions, a half-day steam or diesel train trip through the prairie. In town, the Town and Country Museum has a village-like collection of historic buildings, and the Downtown Historic Walking Tour adds context to the old commercial core.

Stettler is not a place to cross the province for on its own, but it clears the one-day test if you are nearby and can time the railway trip.
