Castlegar

Kootenay river town with Doukhobor heritage, public sculpture, and mountain trails.

Castlegar sits where the Kootenay River meets the Columbia, in a green pocket of the West Kootenays. It is not as pretty or as bohemian as nearby Nelson, but it has a more specific story than most small highway towns: Doukhobor settlement, railway history, river paths, and a downtown that has turned itself into an outdoor sculpture gallery.

The best reason to stop is the mix of culture and landscape. Castlegar Sculpturewalk changes the mood of downtown from ordinary to curious, while the Doukhobor Discovery Centre explains the pacifist Russian religious community that shaped much of the area. Zuckerberg Island gives you an easy walk through cottonwood and cedar at the river confluence.

Castlegar works best as a half-day or full-day stop between Nelson, Trail, and the Boundary country. Come for the heritage sites, add a river walk or the old Brilliant Suspension Bridge, and save the deeper mountain adventures for travellers with more time and a car.
