Cranbrook

East Kootenay service city with railway history, mountain trails, and Fort Steele close by.

Cranbrook is the main city of the East Kootenays, set between dry interior valleys and the western edge of the Rockies. Many travellers meet it as a highway stop, but it has more than fuel and supplies if you give it a day.

The city has a strong railway story, best seen at the Cranbrook History Centre. Just outside town, the restored buildings of Fort Steele Heritage Town give the region a frontier-history anchor. For fresh air, the Cranbrook Community Forest and nearby mountain trails make it easy to get out of town quickly.

Cranbrook is not as charming as smaller Kootenay towns like Fernie or Nelson, but it works well as a practical base with several worthwhile stops. Come for railway history, heritage, and access to the hills rather than a cute downtown fantasy.
