Chilliwack

Fraser Valley city where farms, rivers, waterfalls, and Cascade foothills crowd close together.

North America > Canada > British Columbia > Chilliwack

Chilliwack sits near the eastern end of the Fraser Valley, where the flat farm country begins to press against steep, wet mountains. It can look suburban from Highway 1, but the good day is outdoors: waterfalls, salmon rivers, heron wetlands, and the long road up the Chilliwack River valley toward alpine lakes.

The easy showpiece is Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park, a short forest walk to a high, pale sheet of water east of town. South of the city, the Vedder River Rotary Trail gives Chilliwack its everyday outdoor life, with cyclists, walkers, anglers, and mountain views along the river.

Chilliwack is also one of the better Fraser Valley bases for nature without committing to a full wilderness trip. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve protects wetland and floodplain habitat close to town, while Sxotsaqel / Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park is the bigger escape: old-growth forest, cold lake water, and trailheads under the Cascades.

It is still a gateway, and not every strip mall or roadside attraction deserves your time. But if you have a spare day between Vancouver, Abbotsford, and Hope, Chilliwack has enough real landscape to beat another coffee stop.

Things to Do

Chilliwack's best stops are outdoors: a waterfall off Highway 1, river trails around Vedder Crossing, wetlands with nesting herons, and the longer mountain drive to Chilliwack Lake.
