Invermere

Columbia Valley lake town between the Rockies and Purcells, with skiing, paddling, and winter skating.

Invermere sits at the north end of Lake Windermere, with the Rockies on one side, the Purcells on the other, and the Columbia River wetlands slipping away to the north. It is a small town, but it has the kind of mountain-lake setting that makes a spare day feel easy to spend.

In summer the pull is the water: beach time at James Chabot Provincial Park, paddling into the wetlands, and slow afternoons around the lake. In winter, the lake turns into the Lake Windermere Whiteway, a long groomed track for skating and cross-country skiing.

The town also works as the valley base for Panorama Mountain Resort, about 20 minutes up the road. Invermere is not a polished resort village, and that helps. You get real-town services, a local arts scene at Pynelogs, and quick access to the larger Columbia Valley.
