Kenna Cartwright Park

800-hectare grassland park with hiking and biking trails on the western edge of the city

Kenna Cartwright Park is the largest municipal park in British Columbia at around 800 hectares, occupying the long ridge of Mount Dufferin on the western edge of Kamloops. The terrain is classic dry-belt grassland — sagebrush, bunchgrass, ponderosa pine — and the park's 40 km of trails are accessible year-round, including a few high-point loops with sweeping views over the city, the river confluence and the Thompson valley.

The trails are used by hikers, runners and (off the main lower loops) mountain bikers. Late afternoon and early evening are the best times for wildlife sightings — mule deer are common, and there is a small population of bighorn sheep on the upper slopes. Bring water; the park is dry and exposed.
