Kaslo is a small Kootenay Lake village with more presence than its size suggests. It sits between the Selkirk and Purcell mountains, with a tidy lakeshore, old wooden buildings, and the feeling of a silver-boom town that never quite forgot its grander ambitions.
The headline is the SS Moyie, a restored sternwheeler pulled onto the lakeshore like a memory from the mining and lake-steamer era. Nearby, Kaslo's old village hall and compact downtown keep the same nineteenth-century thread going.
Kaslo also earns a stop for its setting. The Kaslo River Trail makes an easy loop from town, Kootenay Lake gives the village its open horizon, and the summer jazz festival turns the waterfront into one of the most atmospheric stages in the interior.
