Terra Nova National Park

Newfoundland east-coast park of sheltered sounds, boreal forest, ponds, and gentle coastal trails.

North America > Canada > Newfoundland > Terra Nova National Park

Terra Nova National Park protects a softer, more intimate piece of Newfoundland than Gros Morne: sheltered inlets, spruce and fir forest, bogs, ponds, and low headlands along Bonavista Bay. It is not the province's most dramatic park, but it is one of the easiest places to get a concentrated taste of boreal coast.

The park works well as a road-trip pause between St. John's and central Newfoundland. Ochre Hill gives the broad view, Sandy Pond is the friendly swimming and paddling spot, and Malady Head and the Outport Trail put you on the coast.

Come for a slower rhythm: short hikes, kayaking, camping, and evenings when the coves go still. If you expect cliffs and blockbuster scenery, you may undersell it; if you like quiet water and forest, Terra Nova gets under your skin.
