The Halifax waterfront boardwalk runs nearly four kilometres from the Seaport Farmers' Market in the south to Pier 21 and beyond, connecting Halifax's best attractions along the harbour edge. The Historic Properties end — old stone and timber warehouses dating from the early 1800s — is the most atmospheric section, with good pubs, restaurants, and views across the water to Dartmouth. The boardwalk is accessible all year and free to walk.
From the waterfront you can watch container ships and naval vessels manoeuvre in and out of the harbour. Water taxis run to Dartmouth from a dock near the ferry terminal; the Dartmouth ferry is the shortest ocean ferry route in the world and a reliable Halifax experience in itself. The Seaport Farmers' Market at the southern end of the boardwalk operates every Saturday year-round and is the best place to pick up local produce, baked goods, and Nova Scotia seafood. Street performers and buskers fill the boardwalk on summer weekends.
