York Redoubt National Historic Site

A harbour-defence fort with gun batteries, trails, and wide views over the approaches to Halifax

York Redoubt guarded the seaward approaches to Halifax Harbour for more than a century, forming part of the network of fortifications that made Halifax one of Britain's key Atlantic naval bases. The surviving batteries, magazines, and defensive works sit on a high headland south of the city.

The site is as much about landscape as military history. Trails lead through grassed ramparts and wooded slopes to views over the harbour mouth, making it a strong half-day outing for visitors with a car or bike. Compared with the Citadel, York Redoubt feels wilder and more connected to the actual geography of defence.
