Buckhorn, Lakefield and Stoney Lake

Rural Kawarthas cottage country of lakes, locks, canoe routes, caves, and Indigenous rock carvings.

Buckhorn, Lakefield and Stoney Lake is cottage country north of Peterborough in the Kawarthas. It is not one town so much as a loose travel area of villages, locks, lakes, conservation areas, and summer roads between them.

The best reasons to come are outdoors: the Trent-Severn Waterway, Burleigh Falls, Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, Warsaw Caves, and the extraordinary Indigenous carvings at Petroglyphs Provincial Park. This is a place for paddling, picnics, short hikes, and slow lake-country drives.

It makes most sense by car or boat. Public transport is limited, and the area spreads out quickly once you leave Lakefield or Buckhorn.
