Cambridge Main Street Bridge

The Main Street Bridge is a concrete bowstring arch spanning the Grand River in the heart of the old Galt core. Built in the 1930s, the graceful arch form and the limestone-coloured stonework are in keeping with the Victorian streetscape on either bank — a rare example of mid-century civic infrastructure that doesn't clash with its surroundings.

Standing on the bridge gives one of the better views of the Galt riverfront: the old mill buildings on the west bank, the steeple of Trinity Anglican above the roofline, and the river itself surprisingly fast and clear for an urban waterway. Worth crossing slowly.

A story
The concrete bowstring arch bridge was built in the 1930s and remains one of the more elegant crossings over the Grand River — a reminder that public works in the interwar period were often designed with as much care as private buildings.
