Grand River Trail

The Grand River trail runs through the heart of Cambridge, connecting the former communities of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler along the riverbank. The paths are flat, well-maintained, and largely uninterrupted — a good way to see the city on foot or by bike without dealing with traffic.

The most interesting section is through downtown Galt, where the trail passes old stone mill buildings and factory walls reflected in the river. In late spring the river runs fast and brown with snowmelt; by summer it clears and you can see trout holding in the riffles below the old dam. The trail continues north into Kitchener and south to Paris, Ontario, for anyone wanting a longer ride.

A story
The Grand River is one of the few Canadian Heritage Rivers in Ontario — a designation recognising its natural, cultural, and recreational values. The section through Cambridge passes the sites of the original grist and textile mills that built the city.
