Things to Do

Cambridge's appeal lies mostly in what's survived — Victorian limestone architecture, old mill buildings along the Grand River, and an antique trade that draws serious buyers from across the region. The former Galt core is the place to start: a walkable district where stone buildings from the 1870s and 1880s still line the main streets, largely unaltered. The Grand River itself winds through town, with flat riverwalk paths connecting the old factory buildings.

The University of Waterloo's School of Architecture operates out of a converted industrial building in downtown Galt, and the building is occasionally open for exhibitions and events. Galt Arena Gardens, opened in 1922, claims to be the second-oldest operating ice hockey arena in the world — a minor claim but a genuine one.
