Wilno is a tiny village in the Madawaska Valley, but it has a sharper identity than many larger Ontario towns. It is the heart of Canada's oldest Polish Kashubian settlement, founded by immigrants from the Baltic region who arrived in the 1850s and named the place for Wilno, now Vilnius.
The visit is small-scale and specific. Start at St. Mary Catholic Church on the hill, then drop to the Polish Kashub Heritage Museum and Skansen for the settlement story. The old rail corridor is now a recreation trail, and the views across the rolling valley explain why early settlers compared the landscape to home.
Wilno is not a full destination on its own, but it is a good half-day stop if you are crossing Highway 60 toward Algonquin Provincial Park or exploring the Ottawa Valley. Time it for the Kashub Festival or a meal at the tavern and the place feels less like a marker on a map and more like a living pocket of culture.
