Saint-Irénée

Charlevoix river village of summer music, sculpture, and a broad St. Lawrence beach.

Saint-Irénée is a small Charlevoix village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, halfway between Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie. It would be easy to pass through in ten minutes on Route 362, but that misses the point: the village has one of the coast's loveliest river beaches and a serious cultural anchor in Domaine Forget de Charlevoix.

The setting does much of the work. Houses sit between steep green slopes and the wide, tidal St. Lawrence, with the road dropping to a bay where the river feels almost maritime. In summer, the beach and capelin jetty draw swimmers, paddlers, and people who simply want the Charlevoix view without a long hike.

Domaine Forget gives Saint-Irénée its reason to be more than a pretty stop. The music and dance academy, international festival, sculpture garden, and revived church bring a level of programming that feels outsized for such a small place. Come for a concert if the calendar lines up; otherwise, make it a gentle half-day on the St. Lawrence Route.
