Zona Americana

The northern end of Golfito preserves the planned town that the United Fruit Company built in the 1930s for its expatriate management. Wide streets, two-storey wooden bungalows on stilts, and the broad avenue along the waterfront still survive, slowly being eaten by the jungle and the rainfall.

Walk along the avenue between the airstrip and the old hospital for the best surviving stretch. The Banana Bay Marina now occupies part of the old company dockyard. A modest banana-republic history museum (Casa de la Cultura) lies near the old company square.

A story
The Zona Americana housed United Fruit's senior managers in bungalows with screened porches, manicured lawns, and an exclusive country club — kept rigorously separate from the workers' Pueblo Civil district. When the company pulled out in 1985, the bungalows were sold off in lots; you can still walk the gridded streets and read the company history off the architecture.
