Day Trips

Potrero sits in a productive corner of Guanacaste, and several worthwhile destinations are within easy reach. Santa Rosa National Park, about an hour north, protects one of the last remaining tropical dry forests in Central America and is home to wildlife including howler monkeys, sea turtles (nesting at Playa Nancite), and — for surfers — the legendary breaks of Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point, accessible by boat from Potrero's marina. Day trips to both surf spots are offered by local operators and include the boat crossing and basic gear.

Tamarindo, 40 minutes south, is a fully developed surf and tourist town with a wide choice of restaurants, surf schools, yoga studios, and nightlife. It makes a useful day out if Potrero's quietness gets too quiet. The artisan market town of Nosara (about 1.5 hours south, depending on road conditions) is another option for those willing to navigate worse roads for wilder beaches and a stronger surf culture.

Rincon de la Vieja National Park (about 90 minutes from Potrero) offers hiking past volcanic fumaroles, hot springs, and waterfalls — a good contrast to beach days.
