Sodas and Restaurants

The beach road through Potrero has a modest but decent spread of places to eat. The local sodas — Costa Rica's ubiquitous family-run lunch counters — serve the staple casado: a plate of rice and black beans, fried plantain, a small salad, and your choice of grilled fish, chicken, or beef. The fish here is genuinely fresh, pulled from the boats that work the bay, and a well-made casado at a Potrero soda remains one of the better-value meals on the Guanacaste coast.

Alongside the sodas, a handful of expat-run restaurants on the beach road offer grilled seafood, wood-fired pizza, and international cooking aimed at the North American resident and visitor crowd. Standards vary, but the better spots take their ingredients seriously and the setting — often open-air, with ceiling fans and a view toward the water — compensates for anything else. Prices are moderate by North American standards and cheap by European resort standards.

For a wider choice, Playa Flamingo five minutes to the south has more restaurants, including a few with sea views and a correspondingly higher bill.
