Mansión Xanadu

At the eastern end of the peninsula, perched above the ocean on a rocky promontory, Mansión Xanadu is the grandest building on the Hicacos Peninsula. Built by American industrial heir Irénée Du Pont de Nemours in 1930, the three-story Spanish Colonial mansion has marble floors, a rooftop terrace with sweeping sea views, and an interior that has been preserved largely as it was.

It now operates as a restaurant serving French cuisine — expensive by Cuban standards but worth it for the setting and the view from the terrace. Non-diners can visit the ground floor and the terrace during opening hours. The golf course around it is Cuba's only operating course.

A story
The mansion was built in 1930 for Irénée Du Pont de Nemours, an heir to the American chemical fortune, who reportedly purchased a substantial portion of the Hicacos Peninsula for a dollar an acre. He named it Du Pont de Nemours but it became known as Xanadu after the Cuban Revolution nationalized it. The six-hole golf course he built around it still operates as the Club de Golf Varadero — the only golf course in Cuba.
