Kaminaljuyú

Kaminaljuyú was one of the most important pre-classic Maya cities, flourishing between about 1500 BCE and 1200 CE in what is now the western edge of Guatemala City. At its peak it had hundreds of temple mounds, a ball court, reservoirs and an irrigation system, and was a major trading hub linking the Maya highlands with the Pacific coast. Today most of the site has been swallowed by urban sprawl — it sits surrounded by modern houses in Zona 7 — but a small archaeological park preserves several mounds and plazas, and the best pieces recovered from the excavations (remarkable carved stelae and ceramics) are on display at the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Zona 13.
