La Aurora Zoo, in Zona 13 near the airport, is one of the better zoological parks in Central America. The collection focuses on species native to Guatemala and the wider Americas: jaguars, pumas, tapirs, spider monkeys, quetzals (the national bird), and a variety of tropical birds. There is also an African section with elephants and giraffes, which feels incongruous but keeps the children happy.
The zoo is large enough to occupy a morning and is genuinely well-maintained by regional standards. It makes sense to combine it with a visit to the nearby Museo de Arqueología y Etnología, which is a short walk away in the same Zona 13 complex. The zoo is popular with Guatemalan families at weekends. Admission is cheap.
